Jiro Tanaka: 28 years old – Single – No Girlfriend – Occupation: Dungeon Tester (Regular Employee)
Magical Aptitude: Eight (General Class)
I’m glad I survived.
I’ve been training with Instructor Kio and Instructor Fusio for the past week, and they were right: they were demons and ogres.
The training in the afternoons that they were in charge of was so tough that the lectures in the mornings seemed like a relief.
Thanks to their steadily increasing status, the number of times they broke bones decreased, but the number of times they were blown up and knocked into the air and into walls increased.
The armor I was given was similar to kendo armor, so I felt comfortable using it, and the increased mobility and defensive abilities helped reduce my injuries.
However, the number of attacks was definitely higher than before.
The current me might be able to stagger back from a hit by a professional boxer, but that would be a drop in the bucket.
Even if I could reduce it slightly, it would only make up for the difference in strength between a worm and a grasshopper.
The only difference was that it made it easier for the instructors to adjust.
“Oh, just find something that works, and you’ll survive! Hahahahaha!” (Kio)
“Kakakaka, I think I you can take it. [Gravity Magic – Gravity]. See you. Next [Paralysis magic – Paralyze] as a bonus?” (Fusio)
It didn’t take long before I was convinced that they were having a great time, as I watched them train me with the same evil grin that I had seen in my nightmares while I was unconscious.
They were having fun, like children with a new toy, and as my body grew, they would level up their game and torment me in the best possible way they can.
“Pull yourself together! There’s a new wound! Please don’t close your eyes! Don’t worry! I’ll take all the medicine out of their wages! Keep your eyes open! You’ll die!” (Suela)
I can’t count the number of times I’ve thought that I could’ve been finished, and the word “hellish” or “arduous” is the perfect word for the new employee training.
If it hadn’t been for Suela-san’s warmth and [Recovery Magic – Heal], those are the only thing that healed me, I would have run away a long time ago.
Suela-san was always more impatient than I was for some reason.
Was my situation that bad?
It’s a joke at times, but sometimes it’s more than I expected whenever I receive an injury. It’s no exaggeration to say that that it is pure bliss to anyone who receives a lap pillow from a beautiful woman.
I’m too close to death to have any ulterior motives at that time, though.
If I could say something, it is that I’m doing fine except for the fact that I’m dying, I’d be fine. However, I’m not very confident about my personality, and I’ve been having some problems lately.
In the morning lecture, while I was sitting at the back of the class, where I already had it as my permanent seat, looking through the materials before the lecture started. I suddenly heard someone talking.
“See, that person.” (Employee 1)
“Yeah, is he about to drop out?” (Employee 2)
“Oh yeah, it looks like he’s always beaten up during training.” (Employee 1)
“It was rumored that his magical aptitude was barely enough that he’s always beaten down during training.” (Employee 2)
“The last time he was being transported to the emergency medical room by medics.” (Employee 1)
“How can he get such an injury?” (Employee 2)
Yeah, even for a conversation like that it’s hard to reply due to the generation gap, but after being torn to shreds every time, I found myself being treated like a failure.
Thanks to this, most of the looks they give me now are either condescending or pitying looks.
I feel so lonely.
It’s no wonder though.
From what I’ve heard from Suela-san and the instructors, the other trainees don’t get hurt as I do.
They are in like some magic school, where they teach them spells and practice shooting at targets.
When I heard about their training menu, I couldn’t help but say to the instructors, “Why?”
Their reply was.
“You idiot, I’m not going to train a warrior that can be conquered by such lax training.” (Kio)
“Kakakaka, if Jiro wants to despair in the future, I don’t mind.” (Fusio)
So that’s all it was.
There is simply a difference in the educational approach.
Instructor Kio trains in a way that you are ready to work and for other jobs, they choose a slower longer approach.
I decided to think that the purpose was the same depending on the department, even if the approach was different.
Both educational approaches have their advantages and disadvantages, but in my case, this situation is fatal to me. I think that I will not be able to go to the deeper part of the dungeon without forming a party in the future.
If I had been a better communicator and a little more friendly, I could have improved the atmosphere and made some friends.
However, unfortunately, my pride hindered me so since my efforts were not being evaluated properly, and I felt that the treatment was unreasonable and I was a bit stubborn, so I couldn’t accept their attitude.
To put it bluntly.
“I’m dying while going through the training, and I don’t need you guys laughing at me..”
That’s my thoughts.
I would like to say it loudly, but even if I say such a thing, it would just end up them replying, “What with this guy?” Then, the atmosphere surrounding me would only get worse.
Of course, I thought the situation was bad and thought about improving it several times, but I have settled on a different approach. It is better to show it in action than to just say it.
As a bonus,
“Hey, uncle, can you go to the vending machine for a moment? I want a Cafe au lait.” (Employee 1)
“I want tea.” (Employee 2)
“Coffee, black” (Employee 3)
I’m being pushed around by a younger guy who clearly has a complete lack of understanding of the social hierarchy.
Most of the time, if I just ignore him, he will leave with a click of his tongue.
That’s what I’m going to do this time.
I don’t care if someone gets upset.
At times like this, it’s better to keep your expression unchanged and keep a low profile.
Don’t underestimate my expressionless poker face, which I developed at a black company.
I’m confident that I can hold back a certain amount.
Now I just need to get through the morning lecture.
With that in mind, I went through the morning lecture earnestly.
“This afternoon’s training would be held at the first training center, jointly with the other departments. Make sure everyone is in the right location.” (Lecturer)
After the lecture, however, the handsome Dark Elf, our regular lecturer, threw a bomb that I couldn’t ignore and walked out of the lecture room.
“What should I do?”
I hold my head and think.
I guess this is what happens when one problem goes away and another one comes back.
No, there was no point in worrying.
The word “Sick” flashed through my mind, but I quickly put it out of my mind.
In this company, we have a magic potion that is very useful.
Even if you catch a cold and collapse in bed, you will recover in no time at all.
Therefore, I can’t be absent due to passing illness, and I can’t be absent without permission.
“Is there no choice but to participate?”
Loners are not good at group activities like this.
Even if it’s not the result of my own actions, sometimes I need to endure in order to live.
“For the time being, lunch break.”
I couldn’t do anything when I was hungry, so I decided to prepare for the afternoon training. Knowing that it would be better because I didn’t have enough time for lunch as I did at my previous workplace.
“I’m Evia, a supervisor of this company.” (Evia)
A small but clear, cold voice signaled the start of the afternoon training.
“There will be only one briefing. You’ll only be briefed once, so listen carefully and keep your mouth shut. Today you will be fighting the monsters of the dungeon..” (Evia)
The person that talked to us was a female demon with long wine-red hair, reptilian wings, a long, slender tail with a pointed tip, and curved horns on her temples. Contrary to the color of her hair, her demeanor was cold and made a lot of us uneasy.
“The opponent was selected from the subordinates of General Ogre King, General Undying King, and General Dragon King. All of them are the lowest level souls. Don’t stumble at this point, got it?” (Evia)
It’s natural to be able to do it, and I feel like she was implicitly telling us that.
“You can organize your own teams, you can do it individually, or you have multiple teams. This training is a simulation of an encounter battle inside of a dungeon. It’s up to you to decide.” (Evia)
Her figure standing in the center without even looking at the documents, in a simple and secretarial manner she can be described as looking dignified at best and cold at worst.
“The demons will appear for one hour after the start, with three sets of ten-minute breaks in between. During this time, there is no escape from the facility. Don’t worry, you won’t die. If you’re in danger, gather around me and I’ll protect you using a barrier.” (Evia)
The tense air around me seemed to relax with her reassuring words.
In fact, I find such sweet-sounding words to be somewhat diabolical.
Although there are differences in the type of words, they are similar to the words used by Instructor Kio and Instructor Fusio when they are being deceitful.
I can’t help but notice the paperwork on the clipboard hasn’t been turned over since we came.
She probably doesn’t need to look at them because she’s memorized them.
There was a possibility that it was just a formality that she had prepared just in case, but I was worried that there were no other instructors for this training, not instructor Kio and instructor Fusio, and even Suela-san and the other instructors for the other jobs
“Training will start in 5 minutes. Get ready.” (Evia)
But I didn’t have time to think, and even if I did, I wouldn’t have an answer.
There was no one to partner up with, and all I had to do was check my equipment: my armor and wooden sword.
Even so, five minutes is a short time.
Just a quick check to make sure there are no loose parts in my gear and the time is gone.
I decided to at least maintain my vigilance and looked aside at the teams that were working together in the same occupation or even in different occupations.
“Is that a magic swordsman?”
Among them, there was a noticeable group.
The man, who was dressed as a magician, did not exist in the list of desired jobs, since was holding a one-handed sword, not a wooden staff.
A hybrid of a magician and a swordsman seems to be the concept, but the fact that there is no other such equipment besides his, suggests that it is not that popular.
Whether he will be versatile or inept, we’ll find out later in the training.
He was the vanguard of the group, and the other two were a wizard and a woman who looked like a healer.
Still, it was better than the other groups.
The men who tried to pass me off in the morning were three wizards.
Well, I guess they’re still better than me, the only solo person in the group.
Plus, this is the first time I’ve fought a monster in a dungeon myself.
My body was tense and a little tight.
“I guess I’ll just try as hard as I can?”
Nevertheless, fortunately, I can bring myself back to the most optimum level of concentration with a few deep breaths.
I’m not yet ready to die.
“It’s about time.”
My internal clock, which has been on a Demon-time schedule, tells me the time rather accurately.
I took another deep breath and turned my attention back to myself. If I don’t focus on myself and not just on my surroundings, I’ll be the first one to drop out.
“It’s time, the training will now begin.” (Evia)
