~3rd Person Perspective~
“The Princess General of Salvation has arrived! She is a genius girl who captured the impregnable fortress with only a single brigade.” (Kerich)
It was the second prince of this country who was looking at the newspaper with a bitter expression on his face.
His name is Kerich.
We maids around him were trembling. We are fearful that at any moment the Lord’s anger would ignite the fuse and explode into a hysterical rage.
In a fit of temper, he beat the servants as a matter of course. He beats them until he is satisfied.
The other day, he hit a maid who had made a minor mistake. He straddled her and beat her until she fainted. In the end, the maid lost her sight in her left eye and was thrown out of Kerich’s mansion.
She said she had a younger brother who was still growing, but she could no longer be a maid if she looked like that.
When the maid thinks of her colleague standing in the city at night, she feels sad, and at the same time, she wonders when she will be faced with such a situation, and she is terrified.
The maid poured coffee for the Lord with great care, but the Lord’s anger reached its peak. She glanced at the newspaper article. There was an article speculating that the next king would be the queen! It was a speculative article.
This would be a great blow to Kerich’s self-esteem, she thought, and she was right.
He tore the newspaper by to shreds, and then flip the table over.
The maids were horrified. They wondered who would fall victim to his fury tonight, but that couldn’t happen at the moment.
It did not come to that, for his anger was directed elsewhere before it was directed at the maids.
The Lord was looking at a corner of the room. There was a pitch-black space, from which human limbs were surely coming out. Eventually, a human figure emerges from the dark hole.
He was wearing a pitch-black robe and his face was covered by a hood.
He looks like an Evil Priest, but they are sure that’s not a misplaced assumption. By all indications, he gave off an odor of evil and ugliness.
The Evil Priest looked at the maids briefly.
People would usually think, he does not look suitable for the venue. However, Kerich was pleased and shouted for the maids to leave.
The maids went away, thanking the gods for their unexpected help, but when they were gone, Kerich kicked the table again.
“… Damn, this isn’t even funny. What’s with the ‘Princess General of Salvation’?” (Kerich)
“It seems to decorate the page of each newspaper.” (Evil Priest)
“Oh, yes. The Dwarf Times, Sun Elfism, Guardian Hume, all feature our abominable sister.” (Kerich)
The evil priest continues stroking the newspaper gently.
“Only the best newspapers.” (Evil Priest)
“There’s not much about her.” (Kerich)
“I don’t know about that. If she continues to rise steadily in the ranks, she might actually join the fight for the throne.” (Evil Priest)
“She’s a half-breed, you know. She’s some whore’s daughter.” (Kerich)
“Anyone with a royal bloodline and the support of the people can be king.” (Evil Priest)
“…… damn it.” (Kerich)
When he spat again, he continued, “I wish I had listened to you the Demise Cult.”
The Demise Cult is a group of worshippers of evil spirits to which this gloomy man belongs to. It seems that they are committed to reviving the Demon King.
Kerich has been receiving aid from this cult to fight against his eldest brother Maxis, but he has been told for several months now that “Princess Sicily” was the one that interfered with Kerich’s rise to supremacy.
What could their youngest sister with the lowest status do? The only thing she could do was to threaten her own commanding officer. In hindsight, it may have been naïve of him.
When he honestly confessed to him, the priest of the Demise Cult said, “It’s good that you are honest. Your Highness will surely become the king of this country,” he smiled.
――No, he just thought he smiled. Even Kerich had never seen a face hidden under the hood.
“But, Master Exepana. If I am to take the throne, I must get rid of my eldest brother, Maxis. And my cheeky little sister.” (Kerich)
“The former can’t be killed right away, because if you kill him now, there are only a few suspects. But we can’t let her get have more reach than she already has.” (Evil Priest => Expana)
“I agree with that. Will you send an assassin?” (Kerich)
“The princess is surrounded by skilled personnel. A man named Victor the Demon Lord. And that maid girl. And the most powerful court magician in history.” (Expana)
“The most powerful court magician in history? I heard he’s a white-collar civil servant who’s known as a wage thief in the court library.”
“Don’t underestimate that man. His magical prowess is one of the best in Ernia, and he’s also good at fighting. And the scariest thing is his cleverness. I don’t know if his wisdom knows the meaning of “exhaustion”. He will continue to use his wits to advance the princess’s position.” (Expana)
“He’s a shadow strategist. You make him sound like the legendary magician from our country’s folklore.” (Kerich)
“It doesn’t look like it. Perhaps Leon Almarsh is the Sage of Balance.” (Expana)
“No way. It’s a fairy tale.” (Kerich)
“How nice it was?”
Said Exepana, thinking of a specific way to deal with the situation.
“The cult considers the magician to be more dangerous than the princess, but for you, the princess is probably a thorn on your side.” (Expana)
“That’s right.” (Kerich)
“If so, I propose a plan to have both of them gone at once. Please listen.” (Expana)
Exepana talked about his plan.
His schemes were as cunning and wicked as his appearance and voice.
However, if it is cunningness and wickedness, Kerich is undefeated. Kerich gladly listened to the plot to kill his sister and casually drank the wine on the side table.
The princess and I were at a high-class restaurant in the royal capital, unaware that such a sinister plot was being played out.
We were celebrating having survived the press interview.
It was just the two of us having dinner, but it was the princess who invited me.
Court Librarians and Division Officers are not highly paid jobs. I get paid for two jobs though, but I still can’t easily dine at a restaurant where the royal family goes to.
In the first place, there is no way that I know of any good restaurants, as I consider sausage and sauerkraut from the taverns to be the best food, and even if I had the nerve to invite the princess to dinner, I would not be able to invite her to a good restaurant.
As I was thinking this, I saw the princess in her dress smiling at me.
It seems that the waiter has come to take her drink order.
She asks for orange juice. She recommends a drink to me.
I don’t mind drinking, so I decide to have one. She said they had my favorite brand of beer, so I asked for it.
Then the waiter looked at me. He seemed to be surprised that anyone would order beer in a restaurant of their caliber. I was tempted to say, “If that’s what you think, don’t put it on the menu,” but I restrained myself and just ordered my food.
If we order a common course with fish as the entree, the appetizer will be served in about 10 minutes.
It takes only one minute for the tavern that I always go to, but it seems that these high-class restaurants are a little more complex.
I poked the salad with my fork, which had a jelly-like substance on it.
Since I’m a former noble, my table manners are quite good.
However, Princess Sicily surpassed me in dining etiquette.
Her posture is impeccable and her forks and knives glide without making a single noise. She doesn’t make even a whisper of noise, so much that it seems that she is eating food while applying the spell of [Silence]
I thought she was a genuine princess, but she not only eats gracefully but also makes great conversations.
“Leon-sama, the jelly salad here is excellent. It seems that everything is made from mushroom soup stock.” (Sicily)
After elegantly taking a bite of salad, she smiled cheerfully.
She talks about how the food here is delicious.
“It seems that this is a technique called ‘Nikogori’. It seems that this restaurant was opened by a swordsman who trained in the east and had his culinary passion awaken.” (Sicily) [T/N: Nikogori is like savory gelatin. Served with wasabi.]
“From the path of the sword to the path of a cook? That’s extreme.”
“Or maybe that’s the way humans are.” (Sicily)
“Well, it’s better to cut carrots than to cut people.”
When I say that, I carry batons of carrots in my mouth. The texture was very good and it was sweet.
“I love the carrots and radishes.”
“Well, were you a rabbit in your previous life?” (Sicily)
“Well, I think it’s because it’s cheap and filling, and there might be a possibility of me being a rabbit in my previous life. At least when asked whether I am a turtle or a rabbit, I am definitely more likely a rabbit. Since I am quite impatient.”
As I joked back, the main dish was brought out. It was a white fish wrapped in pastry.
I didn’t know what kind of white fish it was, but when I took a bite, the taste of the fish spread across my mouth. The pastry was also flaky and very delicious.
“The most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted.”
When I said that, Sicily smiled and agreed, “That’s right.”
I felt so happy that I ordered a second beer.
The princess and I were able to enjoy our meal in a cheerful mood.
